How to be more eco-friendly for the environment when using tech

Tech and the environment aren’t often thought of as compatible. But actually both can – and often do – go hand-in-hand when it comes to keeping the Earth clean. Here’s some ways to love your tech devices and Mother Earth at the same time.

E-Cycle old devices

Old televisions, plasma computer monitors and cords don’t have to end up in a landfill. They can be e-cycled. Plastic from some devices has been used to make park benches and much of the precious metals in computers, such as gold, are extracted and then re-processed for use in newer devices.

Arizona boasts a number of e-cycling facilities, including GenTech’s partner AZ StRUT. AZ StRUT teaches students how to refurbish old computers and then donates those devices to schools, communities and organizations in need. A lot of those devices end up in the hands of KidsTech students who take them apart and put them back together again as part of our Crazy Computer Builds program.

Before you recycle your old devices, however, it’s crucial to delete all the sensitive data from them, including printers. If you’re permanently disposing of tech, simply clicking “Delete” on a file folder isn’t sufficient. You’ll want to get the data professionally removed to ensure it can never be accessed again. Make green choices when using technology

Typing emails, streaming videos, texting friends and even downloading music can all increase your carbon footprint. The good news is there’s a way to be eco-conscious while working or enjoying your favorite show.

In an age of when people toss perfectly find old iPhones for the latest model, it’s easy to get into a mindset of simply throwing away old devices. People have turned computer towers into mailboxes and old Gameboys into mini planters. Even old iPods have become some techie’s backup portable drive.
